What Should Mt. Adams People Know about Mt. Adams Pilgrim Chapel?
Pilgrim Chapel is the Mainline Protestant presence on Mt. Adams.
Our services are at 10:30 AM each Sunday with a refreshments hour following.
Care for infants and small children is supplied by Nancy Parsons, M.Ed., an accredited child care giver, who is assisted by volunteers.
All people of good will are welcome. We are an "Open and Affirming" congregation which welcomes people of all ages, races, orientations and more. We honor the "things of the mind" and encourage worshipers to be thinking people.
We have no "courts." We do not hunt heresy. We do welcome dialogue with others, always questing for truth and justice. We are a Christian Church, honoring Christ and receiving His eternal truths, which, we believe, are best understood in the light of 2000 years of accumulated knowledge since Jesus' time. For example, religion and science should be allies, not enemies. Evolution amplifies the Judeo/Christian doctrine of Creation, by offering an account of HOW Creation was accomplished. We understand Jesus to have given us a religion and way of life centered in principles and relationships (with God, others and self.) New and better beginnings center in turning from old ways of thinking and behaving that are counter-productive, finding immediate forgiveness from God, and facing the future with faith, a positive outlook, and love for God, self and others.
Pilgrim Chapel is working hard to provide ever increasing support of ministries to the poorest of the poor, and to bringing about peace and justice in the world, while slowly improving our antique but beloved Meetinghouse. Begun as a Presbyterian Church in 1886, Pilgrim Chapel joined United Church of Christ in 2001. UCC is a Covenanted Union of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed Churches. The Reformed tradition was begun by John Calvin in Geneva. The Evangelical element was begun by Martin Luther in Germany. The Congregationalists were the English Separatists who came on THE MAYFLOWER in 1620 and founded Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Williams, Amherst and many other colleges and universities across America, including Oberlin, Western Reserve, and Marietta in Ohio, as well as a number of colleges to in the South to serve persons primarily of Sub-Saharan African ancestry.
Our Pastor Emeritus, the Reverend Dr. Richard Jameson, is a graduate of Oberlin College Divinity School, and has his PhD from UC. Our Pastor, Dr. Robert Croskery, is a graduate of Phillips University and the Divinity school at Yale. He earned his doctorate at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. his background includes broadcasting, teaching Science, English and Speech, and engaging in business. He has experience in insurance and investments, coal mining and pollution control.
Mt Adams Pilgrim Chapel is supportive of Ecumenical relations with other churches. For example, our people endeavor to support public offerings at Holy Cross-Immaculata. These two congregations have jointly done a pancake breakfast open to the community the past two years. It has been a grand experience.Community groups are invited to use the facilities at Mt Adams Pilgrim Chapel. Several such groups are there regularly. Others would be welcome.Pilgrim Chapel's lay leadership is provided by well known Mt. Adams people and former Mt Adams residents, such as
Richard Boyd

Chief Jim Whitworth and others.
While Mt Adams Pilgrim Chapel is small, it is comprised of people who are courteous, friendly and genuinely questing for more light from God in our lives.Persons from any or no religious background and who would feel comfortable in such an informal atmosphere, and who would like to grow spiritually in such company are invited to visit Pilgrim Chapel and share our joy.
Sincerely,
(Rev.) Robert W. Croskery, D.Min.
